From stuffing tissues in your chest to investing in an array of push up bras, you have finally given in and decided to invest in the breast. We aim to give you the Beauty Boosted facts about the procedure, what to plan for, its outcome and any risks/side effects that maybe associated.

Breast enlargement is also referred to as Breast augmentation. It is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast. There maybe many reasons for this procedure:

To enhance your body contour by increasing your breast size.

To correct or balance a breast size

To reconstruct the breast area after surgery

Procedure

Length of surgery: 1 to 2 hours.

Anesthesia: Local with sedation, or general.

In/Outpatient: Usually outpatient

By inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman’s bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. In most cases the breast is filled using inflatable implants filled with saline.

A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline.

An incision is made either in the crease under your breast, or around the nipple area also known as the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in your armpit.

You should speak to your surgeon to ensure the incision is placed in an inconspicuous area where scaring will not be as evident. This depends on personal preference and also on your individual body.

Via the incision, the surgeon will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket either directly underneath your breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. The implants will be inserted and are then positioned centered beneath your nipples.

The surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete. Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.

What to plan for

In your initial consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your health. Your surgeon will also examine the condition of your breasts and advise you on what is most suitable for you. If your breasts are sagging, your doctor may also recommend a breast lift.

What you are expected to discuss throughout your consultations:

  • Reasons for the surgery
  • What you require/type of surgery
  • Your current health
  • Any medications that you are on
  • Anesthetic to be used
  • Risks/side effects
  • Preparation for the surgery
  • Where your surgery will be performed
  • Recovery/Aftercare
  • Costs

Outcome

Once surgery is completed, you will most likely be sore for a few days. This can be minimized by the prescribed medication your surgeon may give you.

The gauze dressing will usually be removed some days after the surgery where you may find bruising to be present. They maybe some uncomfortable sensation in your nipple area but this will subside within a couple of weeks.

Your stitches will usually come out in a week to 10 days, but the swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.

For many women, they are satisfied with the outcome of the way their body appears. They enjoy the new found confidence with their fuller figure.

Risks/Side Effects

Known Side Effects after surgery:
