People who fit false hair professionally say that the secret to choosing attractive looking wigs or hairpieces all has to do with a person’s face shape. It is more important even then the color of the wig or anything else to do with its styling. In fact the shape of your face can even influence what color your wig should be!
The easiest type of face to by wigs or hairpieces for is an oval shape. Almost any type of style or texture of hair looks great on an oval face. Any style including short, long, curly, straight, bangs, bobs, ponytails or layered will look very natural on an oval face. If you have an oval shaped face you can also get away with wearing almost any color of wig that also suits your complexion including brown, black, red and platinum.
It is a little harder to choose wigs or hairpieces for round faces. The style that is not recommended for a round face is a wig that is cut in the style of a blunt cut bob. This style only makes your face look rounder. You should look for styles that are a little longer and hit the shoulders as usually people with round faces also have double chins that can look unattractive when they turn sideways. You should look for wigs that have straighter hair, no bangs and that are layered so that they have some height at the crown of the head. You look best in natural colors with highlights. Strong shades of black, blonde or red emphasize the roundness of your face.
If your face is square then you also need to avoid square blunt cuts and especially square blunt cut short bangs, which can make your face look angular. A chin length wig look good however. If you must wear bangs then make sure that they are parted on the side, wispy or fringed bangs. Layered wigs and hairpieces look good on a square shaped face (think of Farrah Fawcett’s signature haircut from her Charlie’s Angels Days – it is a good example of a layered cut suiting a square shaped face.) This facial shape also needs to stick to natural spectrum hair colors with highlights and lowlights. Strong shades of black, blonde or red can also emphasizes the sharpness of your facial lines.
If you have a heart shaped face it means that it is an upside down triangle. You don’t want a wig or a hairpiece that has a lot of width or fullness at the sides or your face will appear shorter. The best type of wigs for your face shape are chin length wigs with bangs swept to the side. A softly layered cut will help soften the look of a sharp or pointy chin. You can usually get away with wearing the stronger colors such as blue black, burgundy red and platinum blonde as these colors do suit a chin length cut. Natural colors with highlights will also suit you.
If you have an oblong face then you need to avoid long thin wigs or hairpieces, as they will accentuate the horsey look of a narrow chin. Your goal is to choose a wig that adds width to your face so curly or wavy wigs will help add lateral dimension. You also look best in a hair length that reaches to the middle of your neck. Wigs and hairpieces that have streaks or highlights are best as the solid blue black, white-platinum or bright red colored ones will simply make you look tired and drawn out.
