Where once body hair was considered to be our only protection against the cold, it is now become the deterrent of the opposite sex. Our poll indicates that many of you out there prefer the less hair down there rather than the amazon look.

But did you know much of unwanted hair is genetic? With other factors such as testosterone levels that may also affect how hairy we really are.

These days most Beauty Salons specialize in some kind of Hair Removal for many areas of a Human body. We can also apply hair removal techniques in our own home.

Both popular with Men and woman, people still seek the "longest-lasting," "least painful," and "least expensive" methods for getting rid of unwanted hair.

The most common types of hair removal methods:

Temporary

  • Tweezing
  • Shaving
  • Mechanical Epilators
  • Chemical Depilatories

Less Hair eventually

  • Waxing

Permanent

  • Electrolysis
  • Laser Hair removal

Temporary

Tweezing

This is a technique used more commonly on eyebrows. Usually done manually via one hair at a time direct from the root this method can last up to 1- 2 weeks without growth. Although effective, this process is time consuming if you tend to require to get rid of hair on a large scale.

Shaving

Most common form of hair removal, shaving proves to be a fast effective, cheap way to remove unwanted hair. It can be applied to the face or all over the body. This method of hair removal allows you to purchase products such as Gillette shavers from your nearest grocery store, or invest in electronic razors such as Braun for more long term use.

Using this type of hair removal you will need to consider using either soap or some form of lotion before shaving the area. You should also apply an after lotion to ensure the area is left supple and without rash.

This pain free option lasts from 1 – 4 days before hair re-growth starts to reappear. Hair regrowth tends to be more coarse.

Mechanical Epilators

Mechanical Epilators are a handheld device that grabs the hair follicle and plucks it all the way to the root. Hair re-growth usually begins to appear 2-4 weeks after. There are many brands and types - some with coiled springs, and others with electric rubber rollers.

This form of hair removal is probably the most painful to use as it plucks the hair slower than the other methods. It is advised not use this on sensitive parts of the body such as face, and underarms. For this method to be effective it requires the hair to be longer than any other method, to enable the hair to be plucked.

Chemical Depilatories

A chemical depilatory is where you may apply a substance to the body part and the hair is removed once it is wiped or washed off. Its form can be gel-like, lotion, cream, roll-on or spray. To avoid any skin irritation or burns we recommend following instructions on the pack. This method depending on the brand can be a little messy but is also a cheap alternative with many competitors on the market such as Nair.

Hair re-growth usually begins to appear 1 week later.

Less Hair eventually

Waxing

Waxing is most popular of hair removal within a beauty salon. It is done by spreading a wax combination thinly over the skin in each area then whilst applying pressure with a quick movement against the hair growth, the wax is ripped off. This removes the wax along with the hair and dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth. As this method removes hair from the root, hair will not grow back until 3-8 weeks. All areas on the body can be waxed. This method is used by both male and female.

It appears that less hair will eventually grow back, with hair more fine and soft. Although effective with good long term results, this method is painful when the wax is initially pulled off the skin.

There are home wax kits that can be brought, but the anxiety of ripping the wax off yourself can sometimes be more painful than the event itself! We recommend going to a professional to get your waxing done.

A professional beautician has been trained to ensure less pain with application and faster results. Every salon experience can vary. With different types of wax and services used. The ingredients in wax can affect your skin – so do ask your beautician. The aftercare of waxing is usually a soothing moisturizer. As services vary from Beauty salon to Beauty salon, we suggest you:

  • Find a location to suit your lifestyle, be that near work or home (Including, easy access for parking/travel)
  • Products to suit your skin
  • Ensure Hygiene practices are followed
  • Prices are reasonable
  • Service on time

And most important, that you are in a Comfortable environment. Exposing your body to people can be quite daunting, let alone the urge to scream when your wax is pulled off. Don’t worry, over time, what we call the “Body Boost Cringe” will ease and it will be just another routine to which you adapt to.

Permanent

Electrolysis and Laser Hair removal are the most expensive form of hair removal but the only permanent method of hair removal.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a method only used by Beauty Salons or professionals. It is machine where using a fine wire an electric current is used to permanently remove the hair follicle. Although usually painful, you may avoid this by using a pain reducing gel at least half an hour in advance.

Needle epilators push a very fine sterile wire alongside the hair and into the hair follicle, and an electric current destroys the hair root at the bottom of the follicle. The loosened hair is removed with tweezers, and each hair is treated individually.

Because this technique destroys the hair follicle, it is the most permanent hair removal method.

Although this method involves a series of treatments most likely 8, to ensure all cycles of your hair growth are removed. This is a costly exercise but with great long term outcomes.

Laser Hair removal

Laser Hair removal is the newest permanent hair removal method being used by Beauty professionals. It is a very similar concept to tattoo removal where a laser light hits the skin and opens up the follicle.

What occurs with the Laser Hair Removal is that the follicle is heated via light emitted by the machine. The duration of each pulse is just so long that enough light and energy is absorbed by the follicle to destroy it, but not long enough that excess heat is transferred to the skin surrounding the hair follicle.

During the healing process of this treatment, we recommend that you should avoid any direct sunlight. The duration of treatment varies depending on the laser machine used.

Even though the more expensive of the two permanent hair removal methods, this method appears to be less painful.

We always recommend using this method with certified operators only.

We at Beauty Boost always recommend to:

  • Loofah – this is where you scrub the dead skin cells off with a special form of sponge usually cheap corn sponge you can purchase at your nearest grocery store
  • Ask your beauty salon questions about what products they use
  • Ensure aftercare process is being followed, even a moisturizing application
