Whether it’s long, short, grey, red, curly, straight, braided or even sparse. Beauty Boost believes that hair plays a vital part in our appearance. The key to having a good hair day is to really know your hair, getting the right style for you and keeping it in good condition.
Know your hair
Did you know a hair is an outgrowth part of the skin called the epidermis? It has two distinct parts, the hair follicle and the hair shaft.
On average each person’s head has 100,000 hair follicles. As we get older our hair follicles lessen, with each follicle producing at least 20 hairs in its lifetime.
Our hair’s characteristics are directly inherited from our parents.
The style, length and condition of our hair play a part in the way we are perceived socially. From punk rock hairdo to a dreadlock hippy, we can use this part of our body to make a statement to the world.
Each hair grows for many years, shampooed, conditioned, cut, blown dried, coloured, bleached, permed or exposed to sun and wind. None of these treatments affect the growth of the hair. Some may only damage the hair shaft. Eventually the hair spontaneously falls out. The follicle rests for a little while, and then starts to produce yet another new hair. This is called the hair cycle; a hair cycle can last up to 7 years.
In actually fact, not much can interfere with the growth of hairs, only severe burns or scars can affect a hair follicle. Certain drugs can prevent hair from growing but eventually once the medication is stopped, the hair cycle begins.
Did you know that plucking a hair from a follicle brings forward the next period of hair growth in that follicle?
Thinning or balding facts
Everyone loses between 50 - 80 hairs a day. They tend to come out with brushing and shampooing. So if you wash your hair only once a week, it is perfectly in order for you to lose several hundred hairs at one go!
Over the years, the number of follicles capable of growing hair declines naturally. Some genetic traits mean that your hair follicles in the scalp will no longer produce hair, sometimes causing thinning and balding of the hair.
When you pull at your hair lightly with your hand, hairs tend to come out. These hairs are usually ready to fall out anyway. The way you can identify this is by looking at the roots. If there is a little hard white bead on the root end then it is naturally ready to fall. Brushed-out hairs usually have this kind of root.
On the other hand, if the root of a hair that is pulled hurts and is fat, soft to the touch and sticky (sticking to your hand means it still carries fluid from the follicle). It means the hair was not ready to be shed.
Beauty Busted Myths
- Baldness is not due to the wearing of hats caps, turbans or helmets.
- Baldness is not due to the presence of ’poisons’ in the air.
- No cosmetics, soaps, shampoos or conditioners can cause baldness, or make it worse. The growing roots of the hairs are deep inside the skin, and are unaffected by anything that is put on the hair.
