Otoplasty or Ear Surgery

Otoplasty or ear surgery is commonly described as ’ear pinning’ and refers to the repair of abnormalities of the external portion of the ear. This commonly involves setting ears back closer to the head or reducing the size of unusually large ears. This procedure is usually performed on children aged four to 14 since the ears are almost fully grown by the age of four years old.

When ears protrude noticably, people are often teased by their peers and feel self-conscious. Adults often wear their hair in ways that will hide the ears. Ear surgery can also be performed on adults, without any additional associated risks.

Incisions are placed behind the ears so that there are no visible scars after the operation. If the ears are protruding they may be rotated back and if some of the natural folds are missing they are created. Missing or abnormal sections of the ear may be constructed from tissues taken from other parts of the ear or body.

The operation is performed under a light, general anaesthetic and is a day procedure. The patient is required to wear a pressure dressing after surgery for up to 10 days. Some bruising and swelling may occur.
