Like many plastic surgery procedures, breast enlargement has both disadvantages and advantages. They need to be weighed out by you personally along with advice from any medical professionals that may be able to help you reach the right decision such as a therapist or a doctor. You should also consult several plastic surgeons before you get work done to see what they say about your suitability as a candidate for breast surgery. Consulting a family member who knows about your family history is also important as many completely flat chested people in their teens and twenties suddenly become double D breast sizes in their late thirties and forties. If this is in your future then getting a breast enlargement when you are young might be a form of breast enlargement overkill.

Obviously the main advantages to getting a breast enlargement is greater self-esteem, but that usually only applies if your self-esteem is based on approval from men. Only men really wish to see a woman with larger breasts; fashionable women are more flat chested lately. Still some women see themselves as more desirable with an increased chest size. This means that their confidence increases with each inch added. This could lead to more flirting and also more sex with a partner, which is of course healthy.

The main disadvantage to having a breast enlargement is the same one that is true of having any operation. Wounds can become infected or you could suffer from excessive bleeding. Yet another common reaction is an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Some individuals suffer from secondary side effects from pain medication that is administered afterwards such as addiction, severe constipation and kidney failure. Sometimes the pain of this procedure does not minimize for months.

Another major risk of a breast enlargement is the hardening of the breast implants. This is called encapsulation. When this happens the implants become painful and hard as boulders. The shape of the breasts can also become distorted. A second operation is often needed to correct the situation.

Yet another side effect of a breast enlargement is numbness around the nipples. This is because some implants are actually inserted through incisions in the nipples. Numbness can occur wherever the breast implant is inserted however. This numbness can also make it more difficult for a woman to breast feed her baby.

Another con of breast enlargement is that they can obscure the effects of a mammogram making early signs of breast cancer more difficult to detect. Manual self-breast exams can also lend misleading results if you have breast implants.

The very worst thing that can happen is that your breast inserts can break and leak inside your rib cage and enter the tissues and bloodstream. This can cause all sorts disorders and mysterious illnesses like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromylagia, depression and immune problems. The fact that the consequences of having a breast enlargement done can be so serious is exactly why you need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure before you have it done.
