Before you get a rhinoplasty, also commonly known as a nose job, you need to assess why you are doing so? Sometimes this type of operation is necessary if a doctor recommends it to cure a deviated septum. Many people who have deviated septums have also broken their noses at one point causing it to become crooked or misshapen. The deviated septum, which can cause collapsed nasal pages and make it difficult to breathe can sometimes be qualified as an operation that is covered by insurance. However mostly a rhinoplasty is perceived as a cosmetic operation.
One mistake that people make when they get any type of plastic surgery (but especially rhinoplasty) is that somehow changing their appearance will change their entire life. Even if the plastic surgery does manage to change their appearance for the better many people who get a rhinoplasty are disappointed when the nose job doesn’t change their life conditions. You should also be ready for the consequences if you change vastly in appearance. A good example of a celebrity who got a nose job and now regrets it is Jennifer Grey who starred in Flash Dance. Once she had her signature hooked nose corrected, she lost her familiar appearance and became unmarketable as an actress as television and movie producers realized that her fans couldn’t recognize her. This totally took away her box office appeal.
Rhinoplasty covers a broad range of surgeries, which you must talk to a plastic surgeon about specifically. These surgical treatments can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury. How invasive this surgery is really does depend how much work needs to be done
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy, psychologically stable then you are probably a good candidate. Age may also factor into whether or not you can have a rhinoplasty. Most plastic surgeons prefer to work with on younger individuals as their ability to heal is better. Many of them are reluctant to work with smokers who are prone to infection and slow healing. Also an ethical surgeon will not operate on any teenagers until after they have completed their growth spurt. This is around age 14 or 15 for girls and 17 or 18 for boys.
Like most plastic surgeries, rhinoplasty does carry some risks. Complications include infection, burst blood vessels, scarring and a possible adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Yet another rare possibility (that is more common in people who have had several rhinoplasties like Michael Jackson) is necrosis, which could lead to the loss of the entire nose.
This type of operation usually only takes an hour or two and it is usually done under a general anesthesia. Most people recover well from the bruising and swelling associated with the operation but sometimes pain killers are prescribed to deal with mild post operative pain.
