The Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

It is a bit old fashioned to think that bigger breasts somehow make your life easier. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact one of the most popular surgeries is the breast reduction surgery.  Breast reduction is also known as a mammaplasty.

Why are breast reductions becoming so popular?  First of all if your breasts are too large it is difficult to find clothes to fit. You might end up wearing plus sizes even though the rest of your body is small just to accommodate your large breasts.  Another problem is that women with large breasts are often not taken a seriously or perceived as intelligent as women with small breasts. This causes big-breasted women problems with the career. Furthermore the constant objectification of them sexually also causes them big troubles psychologically, especially when it comes to self-esteem.

A breast reduction may also become necessary if the size of one’s mammaries is causing the individual pain. Women who have overly large breasts may have back, neck and shoulder pain. In fact their breasts may be so heavy that their back is actually put out, or else they develop grooves in their shoulders from their bra straps as the result of carrying large amounts of breast tissue. These individuals can also suffer so much breast pain during exercise that they don’t bother to, thus putting them at risk for unhealthy weight gain.  Women with extremely large breasts also ask for a breast reduction sometimes because they develop rashes beneath the breasts, under the arms and also under their bra straps, especially when it is hot out.

A study done at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine showed that almost 98% of women who have had a breast reduction performed would also recommend it to other women as almost all of them saw 80% and upwards relief of their symptoms such as back pain, shoulder, pain and breast pain during exercise.

It is just not women that sometimes need a breast reduction. Sometimes men need them too. The male breast reduction procedure is known as gynecomastia and like the female breast reduction procedure is performed by a professional plastic surgeon. Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts."  It is very common and affects estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. In the vast majority of cases there is no known cause for the disorder, which can have many males feeling very self-conscious about their appearance.

Men get a breast reduction for the same reason that women must – to relieve back pain, rashes and personal embarrassment. If male breast reduction surgery is required because the man is suffering from a type of hormonal disorder that can cause the breasts to grow like a woman’s then the operation may not be considered as merely cosmetic and be covered by health insurance. However if the swelling male breasts are the result of obesity you may be out of luck getting male breast reduction surgery covered by insurance.
