This type of massage utilises many basic types of movements including a stroking movement called effleurge which means to “skim over”. The skimming over motion is done with the palms of the hand open.
Another movement used is called petridssage, which means “to knead.” The fingertips and palm are also used to lift, roll or do percussive movements on the surface of the skin.
Swedish involves a lot stroking movements so a great deal of cream, lotion or oil is often applied to the skin to reduce friction and allow for smooth strikes.
Swedish massage is helpful in reducing pain and it is also shown to have a calming effect so it is also useful for reducing stress.
