My niece has just hit puberty and her obsession with trying to look good and keep up with her peers is driving her family crazy. Being in an all girls school, it appears all the girls that were once timid little beings have now become beauty obsessed teenagers.
There was a day, where once you hit 13 your mother would explain what it means to become a woman by wearing a training bra, getting your period.. Nowdays 13 brings the onset of lace g-strings, hipster minis and hair extensions.
The newest craze is to categories girls as a “Diaz” or “Ugly Betty”, the fear of my niece being an Ugly Betty pressures her parents into giving into the lip-gloss, latest accessories, hair colour.. Don’t know if it’s a combination of parent’s guilt to give in or the growth hormones in our food ..but she looks 18.
Are we a society obsessed with beauty?
Yes we as a society are obsessed with beauty but it also comes from the inside which is what many fail to realize, we teach children grace and etiquette, how to feel good as well as look good so they understand that the two go hand in hand. I can understand people wanting to keep up with whats in but they have to have a good idea of whether whats in is right for them as a person. Would green hair fit your personality? Would a certain color compliment your skin better than it would someone elses.
