"Hair lightening," referred to, as "bleaching" is a chemical process involving the disintengration of the natural colour pigment or artificial colour pigments from the hair. Temporary hair colour is available in various product forms including rinses, shampoos, gels, sprays, and others. This type of hair colour is typically used to enable bright vibrant shades such as red or orange. These colours are more difficult to achieve with permanent or semi-permanent dyes.
Semi-permanent dyes deposit colour on the hair shaft without lightening it. This formula has smaller molecules than those of temporary tinting formulas, and is therefore able to penetrate the hair shaft.
Highlighting and low lighting the hair is also forms of hair colouring. These can also be temporary to permanent methods of adding light or dark streaks to selected strands of hair.
