Tongue Piercing PerthA tongue piercing is a body piercing that is straight through the tongue. The type of piercing used is usually the barbell style with a ball at each end. However some people opt to have a hoop put through the tip of their tongue.
A tongue piercing can be quite uncomfortable and the tongue will be swollen three days to two weeks after the treatment. It usually takes the tongue piercing four to six weeks to completely heal. During that time an alcohol free antibacterial mouthwash should be used to keep the area clean.
If you decide that you do not want your tongue piercing anymore it is usually no problem. Once you remove the piercing the tongue takes one week to a year to close up totally depending how big the hole for the piercing was in the first place.
Tooth and gum damage are risks, but they can be minimised by the proper placement of the jewellery in the mouth.
