Sometimes breast reconstruction is required if a woman was born with misshapen or asymmetrical breasts. In that case implants, usually saline may be used to equalise the look of one breast or tissue may be used to remove another.

Implants are also used in the case where the person needs to restore breast tissue after a mastectomy or having a lump removed from the breast. Tissue can be taken from elsewhere on the body or saline implants may be used to give the breast the illusion of fullness. If the person’s nipple is missing that can also sometimes be part of a full breast reconstruction. Although full feeling is never restored to the breast area today’s plastic surgeons can do a very good job of restoring lost fat, muscle and tissue for cancer patients who have had their breasts removed.
