Deep tissue massage is a type of massage that concentrates on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. This is not a relaxing massage and as its intent is to get rid of knots and tension in the body it can be quite painful.

However deep tissue massage is especially helpful to relax chronically tense and tight areas such as the neck, the shoulders and the lower back. The style of deep tissue massage is also a little different then most people may be used to. The movements are slower and the pressure is deep and concentrated.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually bands of painful, rigid tissue in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These bands are called adhesions. They can block circulation and cause pain and limited movement. The purpose of deep tissue massage is sophistically broken down these adhesions to help relieve pain and restore normal movement. To facilitate this the massage therapist often used deep pressure across the muscles where they are tied up and tense.
