Ear Shaping (Otoplasty) Canberra
Ear surgery, or otoplasty as it is more formally known, is typically performed to set prominent ears closer back to the head by "tacking" them back to the skull surgically. Sometimes it is performed to reduce the size and look of large ears.
This type of plastic surgery can be done at any age but typically it is performed on children before the ages of four and fourteen years old. The operation is not performed on kids under four years old as the ears are not fully formed. However it is usually done as soon as possible so the child can avoid ridicule from his or her peers.
There are very few risks with this type of surgery, which is usually done under a general anaesthesia and performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. A small percentage of patients may develop a blood clot on the ear. It may dissolve naturally or can be drawn out with a needle.
Occasionally, patients develop an infection in the cartilage, which can cause scar tissue to form. These types of infections usually treated with antibiotic. In some cases additional plastic surgery may be required to drain the infected area.
