A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is usually administered as a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen firmer. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle of the core stomach wall. Patients who have a flabby stomach after pregnancy or extreme weight loss usually seek this type of surgery.

There are many different kinds of tummy tucks including a partial abdominoplasty and a complete abdominoplasty. Both are major surgical procedures that require weeks of recovery time, a hospital stay and also general anaesthesia. The operation is usually performed by a qualified plastic surgeon and is sometimes done in conjunction with liposuction, which removes a great deal of fat from the abdomen.

Full recovery usually takes from three to six months and afterwards patients can’t do any heavy lifting. If you are smoker you may not be allowed to have this operation done at all.
