Body wraps are strips of cotton or linen soaked in special herbs or oils that help a person lose weight. The idea is that the thermal properties of the herbs combined with the tight wrapping create a cocoon that makes the body sweat out the excess pounds. Of course the type of weight lost achieved with this technique is mostly water. This is why advertisements can claim that inches can be lost from the waist, hips or thighs through the use of a body wrap. The inches are lost but the weight loss is temporary.

Not all body wraps are strictly for weight loss. Many of them are developed in order to help the person detoxify after an illness or physical stress. These types of wraps often contain medicinal herbs to help the individual sweat out poisons from the body. Afterwards the person feels tired, but very cleansed and refreshed. This type of wrap is also very good for flushing out toxins from the lymphatic system.

You should avoid getting a body wrap and opt for another treatment if you suffer from contact dermatitis or any other types of plant allergies.
