Self Tanners SydneySelf tanners have been around since the 1960s when a link was first detected between tanning and UV exposure. Sunless tanning, which is also known as self tanning, or UV-free tanning refers to the act applying chemicals on the skin to produce an effect similar in appearance to a traditional suntan. Sunless tanning arose in response to links between sun exposure and skin cancer.
The self-tanners available are called sunless tanning or self-tanning lotions. It is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that is the active ingredient. The tan is not a dye, stain or paint. Instead the chemical reacts with amino acids in the dead layer of cells on top of the skin. The darkening of these cells is called the Maillard reaction. No exposure to ultraviolet rays is required to kick start this tanning process.
Self tanners are non-toxic and safe. You can achieve a rich looking tan, without the damage associated with UV exposure. The tan is temporary and will fade gradually over three to ten days.
